As I've mentioned before, we've been trying to help raise money for Gladney's humanitarian aid projects in Ethiopia - and if you know anything about Gladney, you know they really do some terrific work (yes, I know... I sound like a broken record). Specifically, we are trying to raise the funds needed to cover the cost of running the foster home where Simon lived before we met him (one of 10 homes Gladney currently operates in Ethiopia).
Well, it seems my fundraising skills could use some improvement. We are so grateful for all the donations, assistance and kind words we have received, but we still have a long way to go to reach our goal of $30,000 - the cost of running the center (including caregivers' wages, food, shelter and medical supplies for about 25 children) for one year.
Simon turns one year old later this week, and as I have been reflecting on the past year and our time with him, I am overwhelmed with emotion. Our lives have changed in ways we cannot describe. And it always comes back to Gladney, to Ethiopia, to our memories of seeing the first pictures of Simon, to meeting the wonderful women in Addis Ababa who take such amazing care of Gladney's children and ensure that they receive love and care while they wait for their forever families. We are so honored to have met these amazing women who cared for Simon, many of whom were orphans themselves, and we want to make sure they are recognized, appreciated, and cared for too.
So in honor of Simon's first birthday, I am giving this fundraising thing one more push.
Friday marks a year in the life of Simon. 366 days (remember, last year was a leap year!). So I am setting a new goal: to raise 366 donations by the end of February.
Think about it, if we could get 366 people to give even one dollar a piece, we'd have contributed more than 3 months' wages for one of the caregivers... enough safe drinking water for 3 of the children in the care center for an entire year... If 366 people gave 5 dollars a piece (a total of about $1800), we'd have raised enough to pay for all of the food and medical supplies for all of the children in the home for about 2 months or enough to cover 18 months wages of one of the caregivers. And if people gave a little more... well, the possibilities are endless!
So join me friends, family, fellow Gladney families, fellow adoptive families, and anyone who happened to stumble upon this blog: make a donation - even one dollar (just click here and indicate "Simon's foster home" in the "in honor of" section of the online donation form... help us spread the word... or read more about Gladney's humanitarian aid efforts.
I think it's safe to assume that everyone reading this blog has been touched by adoption. Well, this money goes straight to those who are helping people like us build our families. Let's make sure that they get the help they need too.

case closed
We are homeowners!! After years (literally) of searching for the perfect apartment, we finally found the right fit... and today we closed on our soon-to-be new home.
