a beautiful day
Although we are both very interested in and, in fact, pretty opinionated when it comes to politics (though not always of the same opinion), we have generally chosen to keep our thoughts and beliefs more private. However, I have been so moved and personally touched by this election and all that it represents, that I felt the desire to express some of that here.
And it's not about whether or not Barack Obama shares my views on taxes or stem cell research or Iraq... It's about the fact that our country is embracing the idea that leadership opportunities are not limited to white men of a certain age and religious faith. It is the fact that my son will become an American citizen during an era of diversity, change, global awareness, and inclusion. It is the fact that people are taking responsibility for themselves and for the direction of the country. It is the fact that Americans are beginning to look first at what we all have in common, and not at our differences.
I cannot think of a better gift to my son than to be able to say to him with conviction that the color of his skin will not limit his opportunities in life.
We are not naive. We know that racism and sexism and ageism and lots of other "isms" still exist, and we know that we will encounter challenges as we try to raise our son (some because of the fact that we are a mixed race, mixed religion family, some not). But we are ever more optimistic that these challenges will be the exception and not the rule.
